Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Harlem, Iris Escobar has been a nurse for more than 30 years. Educated at Julia Richmond and Bronx Community College, she came to Silvercrest in 1993 from hospital nursing. She floated to all the units and gained experience in dialysis, ventilators, traumatic brain injury and dementia. Iris was then, and remains now, impressed with the challenges Silvercrest provides her... "every new program and technique is brought to us here. They continually educate us in the finest nursing practices."

Iris has also enjoyed the diversity of the Silvercrest environment. Both residents and staff hail from all over the world, making it possible to help all residents become adjusted. "It hardly matters where you come from... we have some skilled staff who will know your language and your culture."

Raising her three boys in Queens after the passing of her husband, Iris became more sensitive than many to the need for supports from outside the family. She loves the way Silvercrest encourages resident families, and she has taken the lead in providing support to the loved ones of all for whom she cares. "We make a real bond with our patients here, and we also come to know and love the families. So many of them work so hard to be there for their loved ones... its a privilege to be able to help lighten the burden."
